I love indian food! But to navigate through the many, many places in India offering a mixture of westernized and indian food is always a gamble. You never know what you´re going to get. How about an egg-less omelet or Marsala lasagna? The indians isnt short of creativity when it comes to cooking or menus. That said, there is a lot of excellent places to eat. Here is my favorite places in Udaipur!

Jagat Niwas Palace

Not far from where I´m usually staying at the Lal Ghat Guest House  on Lal Ghat is the Jagat Niwas Palace  lake side hotel and restaurant. I prefer to sit on the rooftop terrace with the best view of the sunset in Udaipur you can possible get. It’s also great to sit inside in the alcoves by the windows. They make a great chicken Marsala and they serve alcohol. Most nights there is a puppet theatre to entertain kids – but don’t worry – it’s still a great place for a romantic dinner. It’s also a middel-ranged hotel with many regular guests.

Ambrai

On the other side of the lake, at Hanuman Ghat,  is the Ambrai which is a water-level garden restaurant. It´s a tranquil and pleasant place with good views of the City Palace and the Lake Palace Hotel. Not far from the restaurant is a resting place for elephants and their mahouts!

Edelweiss Bakery

If you crave some  yeast baked bread the Edelweiss bakery  at Lal Ghat is a good place. They also make a decent cappuccino and a good apple cake and apple crumble.

Govinda´s Cafeteria

Another good place for coffee is Govinda´s Cafeteria on City Palace Road. Great place to stop for an espressomachine brewed coffee after a visit to the city palace. A much better choice than the expensive café inside the palace grounds. They also have a good selection of cakes and chocolate.

Shiw Niwas Palace Hotel

For really romantic (and expensive compared to other places in Udaipur) is the poolside restaurant at the Shiw Niwas Palace Hotel. You have to enter through the palace and pay 100 rupees to enter, but I´m sure will feel its worth it when you sit around the pool featured in the James Bond Octopussy movie and. They are also open by day and for a small fee you can lounge by the pool all day long if you need a break from the hustle and bustle.
